The process of elimination

To simplify your career quest, it may be helpful to begin by scratching as many careers as possible off of your list, and as quickly as you can.
It is a little bit like decorating a room in your house: with approximately 45 thousand shades of paint to choose from, it becomes necessary to quickly narrow the field if you hope to make a decision during your life time.
So begin with the obvious ones. If becoming a ballet dancer is not going to happen in a million years…then, erase it from your list and be done with it. Spandex wasn’t likely your thing anyway. If working as a stunt man in the next James Bond movie seems like a remote possibility, then mourn the loss of an illustrious movie career and move on.
At one point I actually applied to work for CSIS, Canada’s spy agency, and now I really wonder why.
This process becomes more difficult from here on, but stay with it. Think. Focus. Is there an entire class or category of work that you would never seriously consider pursuing? Do you pass out at the sight of blood? Great. This means that all medical-related occupations can summarily be kissed goodbye. We are making progress. Did you almost qualify as a contestant on the TV show Canada’s Worst Drivers? Fantastic! The entire transportation industry can be written off – and not a moment too soon.
Hopefully, somewhere along the way, a light will come on and that little bell will ring in your head as you hear yourself say, “I definitely can’t see myself doing this either, but, you know… that career, way over there, just might be a fit after all.” Not to fear. It will come, eventually.
As you may have noticed, after much anxious deliberation, we finally decided to go with green.
*By way of clarification, this is a picture of our kitchen although we no longer live in this house. As well, after reading this article, my wife kindly informed me that she was actually the one who made the colour decisions. And it is a good thing she did.
